My Favourite Sports On Weekend

Everyone – from weekend amateur to Tour pro – has a favourite stock shot in their bag they know they can go to when the going gets tough and they need a shot they can rely on.

Says Jim Furyk: “I’m a natural fader of the golf ball but sometimes I need to hit a little cut – a shorter fade I can manoeuvre around a hazard to get myself in position.

The Scotty Cameron Newport 2 Detour putter combines the classic style of the Newport putterswith the Detour design and weighting features. Its arched “Detour” design encourages the putting stroke to move along the proper path for optimal performance. Its deep and low center of gravity reduces skidding and produces a truer roll. It features a T-6 6061 Aircraft Aluminum face and body with a 303 Stainless Steel frame and back-weight.

“A few years back I came to the 18th in the Las Vegas Invitational with a two-shot lead so I knew I had to keep my drive in play. There was a hazard down the left so I had to start the ball over the hazard and had to hit it perfectly. I was as nervous as could be but I nailed it beautifully and ended up on the fairway.

“I move the Titleist Vokey Spin Milled Black Nickel Wedge  a little further up in my stance and make sure my left foot is slightly flared or open and drawn back a bit from the target line. “This allows me to make sure I clear my left side through the ball and hit the cut. I don’t try to hit the ball too hard but try to make a nice smooth swing. It’s much easier to cut the ball when you don’t try to whip the club in there.”

It’s a fickle, blustery wind that tends to blow at this time of year. On some links courses it could be in one of half a dozen directions on any give day.  But conditions in late autumn, early winter are rarely quiet wherever we play, so it’s always good to know how to make the most of your driver, especially hitting into the wind.

For a normal drive, the Titleist Scotty Cameron California Del Mar Putter is positioned inside your left heel, your hands and the clubshaft will be level with the inside of your left thigh and the clubhead sole flat on the ground for a normal amount of loft.

To keep it low, it’s important to retain the tempo of your swing but move the ball back a little in your stance, so you’re playing it opposite the logo on your sweater or shirt. You might also forward-press your hands slightly toward the target to hood the clubface a little.

Now don’t try to kill the ball – just tee it maybe a little lower than you would for a normal shot or one you want to fly downwnd and hit it solid. You’ll hit a lower ball flight that bores through the wind.
