Pau Gasol out a week; Chris Kaman cleared

Lakers forward Pau Gasol admitted “there’s something going on” with his right groin. It turns out he was correct.

Gasol has a strained right groin, an MRI revealed Saturday and he will be out at least a week, according to the team.

Center Chris Kaman also underwent an MRI on Saturday for his sore right knee. His MRI results were negative and he is cleared to play.

While Kaman will be available for action for the team’s upcoming three-game road trip, Gasol will not.

Gasol is just the latest in the long list of injuries that have plagued the Lakers throughout the 2013-14 season.

In all, Lakers have missed a total of 153 games due to injury this season.

Help could be on the way soon in the form of Steve Nash (nerve root irritation), Steve Blake (elbow) and Jordan Farmar (hamstring), who are all expected to return to the lineup at some point on the upcoming road trip that will take the team to Minnesota, Cleveland and Philadelphia. In the form of Kendall Marshall, the Lakers have been able to get production from the point guard position with their other three floor leaders on the shelf.

The void left behind by Gasol, however, will be a lot tougher to fill. He’s by far the Lakers’ most productive big. After Gasol’s 16.9 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, productivity from the post is sparse.

Kaman is efficient, averaging 8.1 points and 5.4 rebounds in just 16.7 minutes per game, but he’s only played 23 games this season. Robert Sacre is averaging 4.1 points and 3.0 rebounds.
