If it wasn’t obvious before, the Emmy Awards made it blatantly clear that Sofia Vergara is easy on the eyes.
The Colombian beauty participated in a segment during the awards show Monday night that had some viewers screaming sexism. Vergara, 42, was literally put on a pedestal, doing nothing but standing and looking pretty to spruce up Television Academy chairman Bruce Rosenblum’s sleep-inducing speech.
The move was slammed on social media for what several considered blatant sexism and the objectification of women.
“’Modern Family’ wins every award it’s ever nominated for but apparently that’s not enough for Sofia Vergara to be treated as more than a prop,” a Twitter user under the handle@samala_prosser wrote.
“I wish they did that rotating Sofia Vergara joke with a guy,” authorKelly Oxford added.
At least a few Twitter users, like@TinaCAnthony, came to her defense.
“@SofiaVergara is a fantastic business woman who was in on the joke. Let’s channel our energy in talking about how hot Jon Snow looked.”
Vergara, a four-time Emmy and Golden Globe nominee, echoed the sentiment and defended her skit. She blasted her critics without naming the person who supposedly started it all — who she thinks needs to “lighten up a bit.”
“I think it’s absolutely the opposite. It means that somebody can be hot and also be funny and make fun of herself,”she told Entertainment Weeklyafter the show.
“I think it’s ridiculous that somebody started this — I know who she was — who has no sense of humor (and should) lighten up a little bit.”
Still, Vergara’s message falls flat with the scores of writers and pro-feminist websites that have since taken her, and the Emmys, to task.
