The seasons are changing (sorta), so with the return of spring, comes the latest trends in spring fashion. Yes, it’s time to finally pull out those sundresses, flip-flops and shorts that come in a variety of colors.

Typically, fall and spring fashion schemes stick to the tried and true colors of the season, and this year is no exception. Expect to see lots of cool blues, greens, and the hottest color of the season, pink.

From blush to fuchsia, pink is the new black, making a reappearance in everything from purses and handbags to men’s clothes and suspenders.

And speaking of, bold jewelry is making a statement. Fashion experts note that this the right accessories can help enhance your outfits. This year’s hot item is the “statement necklace,” which helps bring the eye up and set attention to your face.

But the most stand-out trends of this season’s fashions are not the colors as much as the re-emergence of old favorites. Remember the overall craze? What about cropped tops, culottes and wide-leg pants?

For those who might get nightmares from the mere mention of these items, there is hope. Pearls, lace, sheer fabrics and florals are still quite popular, along with classic-cut skirts and dresses. These items contribute to what Belk Vice President of Trend Merchandising Fashion Direction, Arlene Goldstein, calls a “feminine charm” look.

Goldstein also notes that color-blocking and bright whites with pales are a must-have for spring. “Don’t wait for Memorial Day to break out the white — toss that rule out the window,” she said.

When heralding the new season, you don’t have to spring clean your closet and start from scratch. Many pieces can be reinvented with a just a few alterations. Use your favorite black or white blouse as a building block, then add in seasonal trends for a fashion-forward look that works as hard as you do.

With many of the new styles, adaptability is key — play to your strengths and body type. If you think that one particular style doesn’t look good on you, then it probably doesn’t. Experiment with versatility — try new things, and adapt to what works and what doesn’t. Style is personal, and in the end, it’s all up to you and what makes you feel beautiful.

Top Trends of Spring 2014

Lace: This dainty fabric is classic and refined, but now has modern written all over it. From pretty tops, to elegant ensembles and dainty dresses, there’s no limit to the number of ways allowing you integrate this in your wardrobe. The key to sporting lace during the day is to keep things simple and basic. A lace pencil skirt paired to a classic button-down, a lace top worn under a blazer, or a pretty dress that doesn’t come across as too revealing are just some of the examples that will help you keep things on the sophisticated side, even during the early hours.

Just Dandy: Ladies are going brogue, wearing their gentlemanly lace-ups with decidedly feminine flourishes like metallic elements and high wedge heels.

Wide-leg Pants: Relaxed, easy, and cool, wide-leg trousers are comfortable and have the potential to become sophisticated. However, much like with many fashion trends, we have to acknowledge the fact that the wide-leg trousers might not be for everyone. Knowing your body type is what allows you to make the most out of the long list of styling tips tricks. For petites: Wear wide-leg pants with wedges, stilettos or towering heels. Taller ladies should style the trousers with pointy toe flats, ballets flats, lace-up flats or low heels. Remember that the hem must barely touch the floor to create a long and lean look.

Culottes: Consider it the new shape of things. The street style set is showing off ankles in wide leg pants that don’t quite hit the floor — yet take the Bermuda short just a little further. Now considered ultra-chic, as well as figure forgiving, culottes do carry a certain level of sophistication despite their apparent casual feel, especially when styled the right way. The safest and most flattering way of sporting culottes this year is by sticking to a neutral color palette.
