Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is set to participate in ceremonies commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Netherlands’ liberation from Nazi occupation on Monday.

Invited by King Willem-Alexander, Tusk arrived in Amsterdam on Sunday evening, coinciding with the country’s Remembrance Day observances.

Monday’s Liberation Day celebrations will center in Wageningen, the historic site where German forces surrendered on May 5, 1945. Tusk will meet with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof there and deliver a keynote address on freedom and democracy at Wageningen University & Research.

Later in the day, Tusk and Schoof are expected to hold a joint press conference in Oosterbeek.

In the evening, Tusk will attend a gathering at Amsterdam’s Royal Carré Theatre with King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima, senior Dutch officials, and international dignitaries.

The day’s events will conclude with a Freedom Flame lighting ceremony and a concert on the River Amstel, attended by the royal family, including Princess Beatrix. A canal cruise with the Dutch monarch is also part of the commemorative program. Photo by European Parliament, Wikimedia commons.
