Belgium has greenlit its nineteenth defence aid package for Ukraine, with a focus on providing ballistic protection kits, synonymous with bulletproof vests, and a substantial number of

generators. Defence Minister Ludivine Dedonder confirmed the approval of this aid, emphasizing its swift dispatch to Ukraine.

The ballistic protection kits, aimed at safeguarding both civilians and soldiers in Ukraine, will accompany generators in response to Ukraine's specific request. Dedonder highlighted the urgency of delivering these supplies.

Additionally, the Council of Ministers sanctioned an "interdepartmental provision" earmarking 514.2 million euros for support to Ukraine in 2024. The initial allocation comprises 428.7 million euros, followed by a second tranche of 85.5 million euros scheduled for April.

Belgium has consistently extended its support to Ukraine following Russia's invasion almost two years ago. This aid includes participation in the international F-16 coalition, a commitment to supply F-16s to Ukraine by 2025, measures to trace Russian diamonds, and the establishment of a support fund utilizing interest from frozen Russian assets in Belgium. Prior aid also involved supplying generators and an allocation of 2.5 million euros for installing solar panels on Ukrainian hospital rooftops.

In the lead-up to Belgium's EU presidency starting in January, several Ukrainian officials have visited the country. Notably, President Volodymyr Zelensky made an unexpected visit to Brussels in October, signifying the ongoing diplomatic engagement between the nations. Photo by Aung Kyaw Soe mm, Wikimedia commons.
