Colruyt, a prominent supermarket group, has embarked on a groundbreaking endeavor by producing its own Belgian organic wine, becoming the first Belgian supermarket to do so.

The company announced in a press release on Thursday that the initial bottles are expected to be available on store shelves by 2026.

Located in Frasnes-lez-Anvaing, Hainaut province, four hectares of land have already been cultivated with vines, and an additional five hectares will be added next year. The long-term vision of Belgium's largest supermarket group is to produce approximately 70,000 bottles of organic wine annually.

The initial phase of winemaking will focus on white grape varieties, including Muscaris, Souvignier Gris, and Johanniter. In the following year, red grape varieties such as Cabaret Noir, Carbernet Jura, Satin Noir, and Pinot Kors will also be introduced.

This pioneering venture by Colruyt Group signifies a significant step forward for the Belgian wine industry and reflects the company's commitment to sustainable and locally sourced products. Photo by Mcnulty6*, Wikimedia commons.
