In the picturesque Levoča gallery, located in eastern Slovakia, art enthusiasts have the opportunity to marvel at a truly exceptional exhibition – a complete collection of 100 color xylographs by
the renowned Spanish artist Salvador Dalí, entitled "The Divine Comedy."
Dating back to the period between 1950 and 1959, these striking exhibits represent Dalí's illustrations for the timeless classic of Italian literature, Dante Alighieri's epic poem, "The Divine Comedy," according to Vladimíra Novotná Čajová from Levoča Town Hall.
The curator of the exhibition, Jakub Milčák, highlighted the significance of this classic series, stating, "This exceptional collection of 100 color woodcuts showcases the incredible brilliance with which Dalí crafted this masterpiece during that period. By presenting this unique series, viewers can gain a deeper understanding of the sheer magnitude and value of the work accomplished by the great master of our time." The original owners of this remarkable series were none other than the renowned French actress Marina Vlady and the celebrated Russian actor, singer, and poet Vladimir Vysockij.
Beyond its artistic merit, the exhibition aims to offer the public an intimate glimpse into how Dalí brought his beliefs and ideas to life through his unparalleled artistic language, often utilizing an ethereal essence that undeniably resonates with viewers. "Our primary objective is to bring Dalí closer to the audience and reveal previously undiscovered aspects of his ingenious work. This encounter with Dalí's art is sure to captivate not only experts but also those who are just embarking on their artistic journey," added Milčák, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
The intricate works on display were engraved and printed under the watchful direction of Jean Estrade and under Dalí's personal supervision. Regarded as one of the most significant achievements of its kind in the 20th century, the creation of these pieces involved the meticulous engraving of approximately 3,500 wooden blocks and required nearly four years of continuous effort by a team of the finest experts.
Adding to the allure of the exhibition, visitors will also have the privilege of viewing a rare postcard bearing Salvador Dalí's original signature.
