Social Affairs and Public Health Minister, Frank Vandenbroucke, has initiated contact with Romanian authorities to address concerns over the authenticity of dental diplomas, following reports of

fraudulent dentists practicing in Belgium.

A recent report by De Standaard revealed that the Flemish Dental Association has raised doubts about the credibility of dental diplomas issued in Romania. These diplomas are allegedly available for purchase at private institutions in the country. Vandenbroucke stated in a press release that discussions with Romanian counterparts have been productive, focusing on developing solutions to guarantee the legitimacy and quality of dental diplomas.

Highlighting the significance of medical cooperation between Belgium and Romania, Vandenbroucke emphasized that numerous Romanian doctors and healthcare professionals contribute to the Belgian healthcare system, as well as those in other EU member states. This collaborative effort, he noted, showcases the solidarity among European nations and aids in addressing the shortage of healthcare workers. He underscored that patient care quality remains paramount throughout this process.

Dentists possessing accreditations from foreign countries seeking to practice in Belgium are required to have their diplomas officially recognized. Within the EU, a system of automatic recognition is in place, driven by mutual trust in adhering to diploma standards.

Issues pertaining to the authenticity and quality of diplomas fall under the jurisdiction of Belgium's federal states. National authorities can intervene when healthcare providers encounter problems related to billing or patient care quality, similar to other healthcare providers. Oversight in such cases is carried out by the Medical Evaluation and Control Service or the Supervisory Commission. Photo by User:Nizil Shah, Wikimedia commons.
