As per the 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), nine Polish universities have secured positions within the top 1,000 in the global league table. Among these, the University of

Warsaw and the Jagiellonian University in Kraków have been placed within the 401-500 range.

In parallel, the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków and the Wrocław Medical University have found their spots within the 801-900 category. Additionally, the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, the Gdańsk University of Technology, the Medical University of Warsaw, the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, and the Warsaw University of Technology have all earned rankings within the 901-1,000 band.

Known as the Shanghai List, this prestigious ranking has been published since 2003 and is now compiled by the international organization Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, which specializes in higher education research.

This year's list witnessed little alteration at the top, reported Polish state news agency PAP. Harvard University from the United States claimed the title of the world's best university. Stanford secured the second position, while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology secured third place.

In the top 10, eight universities are from the United States, with the remaining two from Britain. Cambridge University from the United Kingdom clinched the fourth spot, while the University of Oxford was ranked seventh.

Comparing to the previous year, where 11 Polish universities were in the top 1,000, the number has slightly decreased this year.

This ranking is determined through various indicators, including factors like the number of graduates and staff who have received the Nobel Prize or the Fields Medal. It also considers the number of publications in respected journals like Nature and Science, the count of highly-cited scholars, and publications included in select indexes. Furthermore, the ranking takes into account accomplishments in relation to the institution's size, according to the PAP news agency. Photo by Zygmunt Put Zetpe0202, Wikimedia commons.
