According to data compiled by industry federation Assuralia, insurers have disbursed a total of 77.2 million euros to victims of the terrorist attacks that struck Brussels Airport and Maelbeek

metro station on March 22, 2016. These figures, covering payouts up to the end of 2023, reveal an increase from the 65.7 million euros paid out by the same period in 2022. Additionally, insurers have earmarked an additional 59.9 million euros to meet future compensation obligations, as reported by Assuralia on Monday.

The compensation provided by insurers extends to 1,403 victims, encompassing claims related not only to fatalities and physical injuries but also to property damage. However, there has been notable dissatisfaction among some victims regarding the handling of their cases by insurers and the Belgian government. Similar grievances were echoed during the trial of the attackers held last year.

Assuralia acknowledges these concerns and asserts that insurers have implemented measures in recent years to enhance support for victims of potential future attacks. Initiatives include a commitment to compensating for non-material damages within one year of the incident, even in cases involving complex injuries. Furthermore, a designated insurer will now oversee medical issues, streamlining the process for victims.

In collaboration with professional associations of medical experts, Assuralia has established guidelines to ensure transparent and empathetic conduct during all medical examinations related to claims. These efforts underscore insurers' dedication to improving the care and support available to victims in the aftermath of such tragic events. Photo by Romaine, Wikimedia commons.
